To Do in Sintra
The most difficult thing about planning a day trip to Sintra, is narrowing down the myriad of options. It is tempting to try to see it all and many tours promise a grand sweep. If you can pick a few sites as your focus and spend time truly enjoying not just the buildings but the grounds, you will have a day to remember. The most famous of all the options is Pena Palace. When you purchase tickets to the Palace, you are also paying entry into the park. The trails in the park surrounding the Palace are pure woodland magic and many people rush from palace to palace and miss the grounds. Walking to the stables or the Chalet of the Countess of Edla along the well marked trails is something you will remember always. Pergolas, lakes, and blossom filled mossy fountains create a dream like experience.
The Moorish Castle, The National Palace, The Palace of Monserrate, The Convent of the Capuchos, and many more, all offer a unique perspective to the history of Portugal. Get into the town early, and stay late, to avoid the big tour traffic. Give yourself time to wander and you will find escapes you have only read about in fairytales.
Be sure to check the Parques de Sintra website for opening times and exhibit closures. They have very up to date information and answers to many questions in multiple languages.
