To Do in Rio Maior
The historic center of Rio Maior has some churches and buildings that are worth a visit although it does seem as if the heart of this city is no longer in its historic center. If you happen to be in Rio Maior on a day when everyone seems to be walking toward the Estádio Municipal de Rio Maior, follow them! It is a great venue to witness just how important football is to the people of Portugal.
Anytime of year is a good time to visit the area known as
Salinas or salt mines of Rio Maior. Located in the verdant valley
at the foot of the Serra dos Candeeiros, more than 30 kilometers
from the sea, this unique and fascinating area has a long history.
The tourism office has maps and information about salt production
and tours and they may even give you some salt to take home if you
enter with a smile. Even today, the salt produced in Rio Maior is
pure and contains not additives or chemical treatments. From
geology and history to production and marketing this area is
fascinating from every angle. It is unique in the world and well
worth exploring.
