To Do in Óbidos
The town speaks for itself. Spending time wandering this village will reveal something different to everyone who takes the time. You may go in search of a quiet bench in the sun and find an orange grove. For the adventurous members of the group who packed sensible shoes, walking the intact town wall (very precarious in places) is what makes Óbidos different from many other walled villages. Each church has its own history but the most popular is the Igreja de Santa Maria given its location in the central praça or square. It is also known as the location of a very famous wedding of ten-year-old King Afonso V and his eight-year-old cousin, Isabel, in 1444.
Óbidos has a very hearty festival schedule so it is worth checking the calendar to see if your holiday coincides with one of these splendid events. From the storybook Christmas Village, to the Chocolate Festival and Medieval Fair, a festival in Óbidos would certainly be a highlight of any holiday.
