Nazaré Cultural Center
Standing gracefully along Avenida Manuel Remígio, this iconic building is more than just a landmark, it embodies the very spirit and heritage of Nazaré. Today a vibrant Cultural Centre hosting art exhibitions and events, its walls echo the voices and traditions of the town's storied past. The Nazaré Cultural Centre (Centro Cultural da Nazaré) is a vibrant hub of creativity and heritage, celebrating the town's artistic, cultural, and historical richness. Housed in a beautifully restored building that once served as the local fish auction market, this dynamic space offers a mix of art exhibitions, performances, and community events, making it a must-visit for those looking to experience Nazaré beyond its legendary waves.
A Home for Art and Tradition
Inaugurated on Christmas Eve of 1958, the building became the heartbeat of Nazaré's bustling fish trade. Within these walls, local fishermen proudly laid their freshly-caught fish upon rugged wooden stands. Here, animated auctioneers from the Central Board of the Fishermen's House orchestrated spirited sales, prices swiftly descending until the distinctive local cry of "chui!" pierced the air, signaling a buyer's triumph. Successful bidders would then eagerly claim their fish, identified by numbered tickets passed ceremoniously via a long wooden cane.
Remarkably, this lively market was Portugal's first to introduce fish auctions by the kilo rather than per individual unit-a visionary innovation quickly adopted across the nation.
The creation of Nazaré's modern harbour in 1983 marked a turning point, leading the fish auctions to relocate to advanced, computerized facilities by April 1987. Yet, the cherished old market building would not silently vanish into history.
Transformed in 1995 into the Cultural Centre of Nazaré, it became a new beacon of culture and community life. Adorned both inside and out by striking azulejo panels that depict the town's enduring maritime traditions, the tiles-expertly crafted by Gallardo at Coimbra's celebrated Aleluia tile factory-serve as a vibrant testament to Nazaré's proud fishing legacy.
