To Drink in Mafra
The old quarter, which is virtually in the shadow of the palace, offers many options for having a drink before dinner or after a long day of sightseeing. The further you get away from the palace, the more local your taverna experience will become so plan accordingly depending on your mood. Adega do Convento has a popular and well priced house wine and the location in a converted warehouse is unique and interesting.
Just 10 kilometers away from Mafra is the historic fishing village of Ericeira. On the short drive, stop off at Sobreiro for a miniature replica of a traditional village built by Master Jose Franco. Once in Ericeria, walk any part of the 11 kilometers of the world class surfing beaches or wander the whitewashed streets of the old town. It is amazing how close Ericeira is to Mafra and how different the towns feel. Visiting both in the same day will offer you a rich and diverse outing as Portuguese daily life, past and present, unfolds before you.
