To Drink in Lisbon

If you plan to start your day near the Belém District of Lisbon, make sure Pastéis de Belém is your first stop. Order an espresso and a pastry and you will understand that you have just tasted the original Portuguese pastry. Pastel de nata are available all over Portugal and are delicious but there is only one place you will ever taste the ancient recipe that is still used today to make Pastéis de Belém.

A bar with a view is not hard to find among Lisbon's seven hills. Topo in Martim Moniz will make you feel like you have just discovered a hidden gem. With sweeping views of the city, cocktail masters, and specialty small plates, it is the perfect place to watch the sunset.

An evening in Lisbon would not be complete without wandering the narrow streets of Alfama in search of fado, or Portuguese folk music. While there are many packages offering fado and dinner experiences to tourists, you don't have to look very far for an authentic encounter. Search for a homemade "Fado Esta Noite" sign and an outdoor grill with sardines cooking and you will know you are on the right track. Step inside and you will be transported to another time for an evening to remember.
