To Do in Lisbon
While a day in Lisbon isn't nearly enough time to see everything, because of its manageable size, you can actually see quite a bit with a little planning. Lisbon is a very walkable city and where there's a hill, there's a way. It seems that at every corner a cheerful tram waits to sweep you up a steep ascent. While there are so many possibilities to fill your day, here are a few to get you started ...
Because the Belém District is a bit outside of the historic center, it is best to visit on your way in or out of the city. It is well worth the trip to see the 500 year old Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém. The seafront promenade and park is full of sun-worshipers on a nice day. From there you have perfect views of the Monument to the Discoveries and the 25th of April Bridge spanning the mighty Tagus River.
Once inside the historic center of Lisbon, it is really a matter or preference. A visit to the Se Cathedral and Saint George's Castle are popular. If the weather is good the views are endless. Not to worry if the weather takes a turn as there are plenty of museums to keep a wide range of interests engaged.
Wandering the Rua Augusta up to Alfama or Barrio Alto will give you a glimpse into daily life in Lisbon. Each neighborhood has its own distinct culture all unified by the Lisbonese that inhabit the beautiful cobbled streets.
