To Do in Ericeira
To understand Ericeira is to get as close to the sea as you can. The beaches in the village are more sheltered and better for families. Everyone, young and old, will appreciate a drive along the dramatic coastline of the World Surf Reserve. Ericeira's 8 KM stretch of coast is the first surfing reserve in Europe and it is spectacular whether you brave the waves or not. Make sure to check the calendar for World Championship competitions such as the World Surf League and Quik Silver professional tours.
In true Portuguese fashion, you will inevitably come across stunning churches while exploring the cobbled streets. Duck into Igreja de Santa Marta or Capela de São Sebastião to gain unique and insightful knowledge about the history of the area.
If you plan to combine your trip to Ericeira with a jaunt to Mafra, stop by the small roadside attraction of Sobreiro. In 1945, A local craftsman named Jose Franco, took on the enormous task of creating a model sized village depicting rural life in the area. It is free to wander this walk back in time but if you are inspired, stop by the tavern or adega for an unforgettable pao con chorizo or bread filled with sausage. It will be just the thing to keep you going for the rest of your sight seeing adventures.
